We probably don't need to go on about the benefits of smoke detectors. For over 10 years, every residential building in Victoria has been required to have a smoke detector installed. New buildings and many shared accommodation locations are now required to have wired-in smoke detectors installed, leaving only older homes allowed to use the battery-powered devices. This calls for a licensed electrician both to install the wired-in smoke detectors and then to maintain these regularly.

How can I tell if the electrician is licensed?

For almost all electrical work, it is illegal to have work done by electricians that aren’t licensed. You should ask to see their licence and indemnity insurance policy, which all practicing electricians should have. This covers you if their work causes damage. If you have any doubts, call your state’s Fair Trading department or visit their website to check they are valid.
